Blog#3:PLN, Inclusion, and Community Engagement

How does social media use in public discourse potentially challenge advocacy communications?

Public discourse has an important influence on social platforms. The public discourse on social platforms can allow people to exchange ideas with each other, but it may also transmit incorrect ideas to people. The comments section of YouTube videos, for example, can sometimes give people more insight into a video, and some inappropriate comments can also transmit misconceptions to people. So it’s challenging to use public discourse to advocate for communication on social media.

How diverse is your existing PLN?

Before starting my online course, my PLN was not diverse. In fact, I think the online course has allowed me to diversify my PLN. Before taking classes online, I didn’t often use social media to communicate with students or teachers. Communication was limited to email. However, after starting the online course, my PLN began to diversify. I not only use email to communicate with teachers and classmates, but also use Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Matter Most to communicate with teachers and classmates. These social platforms allow me to communicate more with my classmates. Discussion groups also make it easier for us to communicate.

In your PLN, are you learning from a variety of voices?

In my opinion, the biggest role of PLN is to learn from different voices. In my PLN, there are people from all over the world, and I can learn a lot by communicating with them. I can not only exchange course knowledge, but also feel different cultures, beliefs and customs.I think I can gain a lot by communicating with different people in PLN.

How does social media engage in advocacy communications?

In my opinion, communication is inseparable from social media. In today’s society, more and more people are using social media, and at the same time, social media has become the infrastructure of propaganda. Ubiquitous advertising is a good example. As a carrier, social media makes communication between people more frequent and convenient, which greatly accelerates the speed of publicity and communication. At the same time, social media allows you to make friends amplify your message. This is an essential part of communication.

Hey Evan. I like your insight on public discourse on social media. It is true that there is give and take when interacting with people online. YouTube comments do have a variety of responses that is similar to twitter, but they can type as much as they want to. Harassment is rampant on YouTube since people can likely make fake accounts and get away on it. It is unfortunate the widespread use of social media has probably influenced a lot of political choices, and values. But this is the price to pay for a “free” (Both monetary, and free speech wise) public forum.
This course has slightly expanded my PLN as well, as I am more aware of it, and know I know I need to make an active effort to expand, and maintain my PLN.
    Great work Evan!

Hi,I am similar to you in that my PLN is not diverse either. My PLN has expanded a lot since the online course. I have connected with and learnt a lot from people on various digital platforms who share my profession. I’m sure it’s the same for you. Social media is spreading rapidly and the distance between people has increased a lot, so communication is an important point.

Nice job, in my opinion, from the videos and reading, I found the importance of PLN’s diversity and inclusiveness. Diversity and inclusion can increase knowledge sharing through targeted counselling among professionals from different backgrounds. Through participation, the collective contributes to the challenges facing society, but the community can achieve them.
